Final Goodbye

I walked into this class thinking that I was going to read and analyze a bunch of stories from my favorite genres. I wanted to learn more about these genres, and expand my visual library and vocabulary for it. And I did, but I learned so much more than that. It’s fascinating to hear other people’s interpretations of story, and what experiences they had that led them to draw those conclusions. I didn’t expect to learn as much history in the genre as I did (in hindsight, a foolish expectation not to have), and how interesting the origins of these genres are. While I’m aware that early classes are the banes of many college students’ existence, this was a class I was more than excited to wake up early for. I absolutely adored the Neil Gaiman talk (unsurprising, since he’s my favorite author) and I was grateful to be exposed to movies I otherwise would have not seen without exposure in class. I can assure you that when I went to work in the labs on homework, I would finish whatever movie we were shown most weeks (Attack the Block was my personal favorite that I had not seen before, I think I’ve seen Coraline more times than what can be considered healthy). My only regret is not watching more movies or reading more of the long reads recommended to me. I suppose that can be my summer project.

While the story is told through someone else’s perspective, we never learn about what Lestat is like as his own person. The audience only hears about Lestat in his relation to other people. He refuses to talk about what he was like before Louis became his companion, growing incensed at the mere mentioning of the subject. I believe this is a source of one of Lestat’s defining characteristics: Lestat can’t bear the thought of being alone. This is the source of many of his abusive behaviors. We see this in his actions towards Louis, as Lestat’s is at his cruelest whenever Louis threatens to leave him. The Hobbit and The Hero's Journey

Tolkien’s renowned work, The Hobbit, reflects several aspects of the classic hero’s journey. In fact, the story can be regarded as a prime example of the journey. At the very beginning, Bilbo Baggins is content with his life at Bag’s End, living the life that every hobbit yearns for: a humble, quiet life with a love for food and drink. However, this is all overhauled when the great wizard Gandalf “convinces” Bilbo to go on an adventure, this story’s “call to action”. Of course, Bilbo turns it down at first until he forced to do so, a common reaction in stories with the hero’s journey structure. As the story continues, the journey continues with Bilbo’s tests and ordeals that challenge his views, culminating into a major character change after the spider attack. After killing the spider, he even describes himself as a “different person”. Afterwards, he names his sword, which is commonly done in epic literature as a symbol of heroism. A Wild Sheep Chase - Not Your Typical Creepy Story

My assumptions, this week, were thrown out the window. Reading A Wild Sheep Chase, I had heard it was a sort of mystery. Having previously taken a Mystery and Thrillers writing class, I assumed an investigation of some sort. With the book starting off dealing with the disappearance of The Rat, a close friend of the unnamed main character, I assumed a more typical investigation would be the plot. I did not expect a magical mind-corrupting sheep, an inhuman representative of Japan’s most powerful figures, and a woman whose ears had the power to attract anyone she wanted. What I found most interesting about this book was the lack of focus on any good vs. evil dichotomy, which is more typically found in Western works of similar genres. Most Western mystery and horror works have a very clearly defined “good” side (the protagonist, their friends, etc.) and “evil” side (the monster, criminal, etc.).
